What is slip casting, you say? This ancient technique involves making a plaster mould from a prototype. The mould is then filled with liquid clay over and over, enabling production of multiple matching forms.
Come, immerse yourself in the history, principles, and applications of ceramic slip casting. Gain hands-on experience in creating your own single dropout mould. You will design and hand build a simple clay prototype from scratch, make a plaster mould then cast a number of forms. Experimenting with surface decoration including scraffetto, inlay and wax resist as well as glaze decoration.
This course is perfect for beginners or potters wishing to expand their clay techniques.
]]>This is slow, mindful hand-building at its best.
Rolling out clay coils and slowing building the shape of the pot. Each coil is rolled out on the bench, joined to its mate, then scraped and smoothed. Its super easy and relaxing too!
Decals are images/patterns printed onto special tissue paper with ceramic inks. They are released from the tissue onto the clay before it is fired in the kiln. Once fired they are permanently attached to the ceramic body, ie they won't wash off! You will learn how to use them in the class no experience is needed.
My decals come in blue, red, green and black, with lots of patterns to choose from (all have been designed by me for my tableware, only students from my classes have the opportunity to use them).
Hi Clay Lovers,
As term one draws to an end, we start to think about what’s on the cards for next term.
There are a few exciting things coming up for the Eucalypt Studio.
Firstly, all my hand-bulding clay workshops are listed on the website for the May and June half day workshops. Scroll down to check them out.
I have finally managed to update my stock both on my website and at the Café Collective stores. The Westfield Booragoon store has been given a further 6 month Pop-Up! Yay!
You will be able to continue to purchase Eucalypt Homewares handmade ceramics in the flesh from this divine store.
Remember, you can email/chat to me about organising a private group clay class. Pop me an email for details if you are keen.
I hope you can join me for a clay play some time soon,
Melanie ❌
]]>In this workshop we will experiment with making layers of print design using mini silkscreens, underglaze paints, gel plates and paper.
Then we will use our decorated paper to create designs onto clay slabs.
By slumping the slabs into plaster moulds we will produce a set of little bowls and plates.
During this class we will be using my screens to create the transfers. I have 10 different designs to choose from.
I have 2 weekend workshops listed for April, check out the website and video below for details.
**OPTION OF BRINGING OWN SILKSCREEN**
If you would like to print your own drawings onto clay during this workshop you will need to arrange to have a screen made up through Jackson’s in Northbridge. This costs $40 for an A4 design. Ring Jackson’s to find out the design requirements on 9328 8880. Then bring the screen to class with you.
Please do not bring screens larger than A4 as I don’t have the room for larger screens.
PLEASE NOTE, this is not compulsory as I have screens for people to use, this is only if you want to use your own drawings.
Have you ever wanted to give pottery a go? Are you worried that it will be too hard? Or that you’ll end up with a batch of lumpy chunky ash trays rather than elegant bowls?
Find out how you can design and make your very own set of beautiful bowls...

Each term we make a different form so that by the end of the year (if you choose to come each term) you will have an eight piece, handmade completely by you, dinner set!
Term 1 is bowl making.
Term 2 we make side plates and Term 3 dinner plates.
How amazing would it be to WOW your family and friends next Christmas by serving the Christmas meal on a dinner set you made yourself!
If this sound like fun to you, head over to the Adult Clay Classes page and book yourself a spot for one of my mid week evening classes.
We feel very blessed and fortunate for the time we have spent living and working in Melbourne over the last couple of years. It has help us grow and bond as a family and provided wonderful opportunities for each of us. I’m going to miss all that is special about Melbourne, including the clack of the trams, but I am truly looking forward to my walks along the spectacular Swan river and tinkering in my home studio under the peppermint tree.
I will be continuing my Early Childhood studies and plan to work as a teacher to pre-school aged children from next year. However, ceramics will always be part of my being and I when I return to Perth I will be running some boutique workshops in my garden studio. I will also continue to produce my ceramics on small scale to sell on my online shop and yearly studio sale. This small scale nature of the Eucalypt Studio with every piece solely be made by me, will mean less pieces made, taking longer to produce and just that little be more unique.
My Eucalypt Homewares online store still has a few pieces available to purchase. However, I will close the store for about a month while we move and settle back home. It may be some time before I will have time to make more of my pieces, so if you a hankering for a Eucalypt coffee cup or bowl or plate…pop over quick smart!
Also watch this space for news on my boutique clay workshops in Kensington, WA for term 3 2020…..
